Contract Girls: Our Most Precious Natural Resource
All too often our nation's pornstars are thought of in terms of what they lack. In other words, they are nothing but a series of holes. But contract girls add faces to those holes, and that makes all the difference.
The contract girl, in exchange for the security of a monthly salary, appears as the positive image of an adult studio, appearing in an agreed-upon number of movies and promoting the company at store signings and conventions.
At this year's AVN Expo the contract girls representing Wicked, Vivid, and Adam & Eve were front and center at the entrance to the sprawling convention center.
Kayden Kross has previously had contracts with Hustler and Vivid but seems most at ease at Adam & Eve, where she has joined Bree Olson in a dynamic duo of blondeness.
"They treat me well," Kross said. "I feel like I'm taken care of."
Kross estimated she signed "a billion" articles of paper at the convention.
Kross, the leaner, more glamorous counterpart to Olson's juicy girl next door (contract girls tend to complement each other), had a kind and quick word for all autograph and photograph seekers. Olson, who is still comparatively new, often seemed overwhelmed at the line of fans.
"They're still coming," she said at one point.
Over at Wicked, the defining trait of the six contract stars (jessica drake, Alektra Blue, Stormy Daniels, Mikayla Mendez, Kaylani Lei, and Kirsten Price) was "experience." This is not a euphemism for "old," but Wicked's talent is to capitalize on a star's existing fame and make it greater. Thus, every Wicked girl is already a known commodity when she signs a contract with them.
jessica drake is almost like an evangelist in her uncanny memory of people.
"I remember you from Erotica L.A.," she said to one fan. "You saw me dancing! Thanks honey!" she says to another.
Mikayla Mendez, the tallest of the sextet and the Certified Latina, sometimes spoke Spanish to fans.
"No besos," she said to a fan who asked of he could kiss her. She did it in the politest way imaginable, because her admirer (Jorge from Ensenada) walked away as if she'd kissed him after all.
"She's beautiful," he said. "Muy muy bonita."
The Wicked Girls also seem to have the distinction of Most Likely To Be Seen Somewhere Other Than A Porn Movie, with Stormy Daniels regularly appearing in Judd Apatow films (and she hosted G4TV's coverage of the AVN Expo), Kirsten Price shilling for Playboy TV, and the rest of the crew repping Porn Star class and glamor.
Oddly enough, there is no "girl next door" at Wicked.
Vivid, which originated the contract girl system (though Wicked made its name and fame with a little acquisition called Jenna Jameson) seems to maintain a roster of contract girls almost as an afterthought these days. Hannah Hilton, Meggan Mallone, and Nikki Jayne are all beautiful, but the only household names (at least in my household) in Vivid's lineup are longtime contractors Monique Alexander and Savanna Samson.
But newly-minted Vivid Girl Nikki Jayne takes obscurity in stride. Wearing a headlight-flashing wifebeater, the British Jayne greeted each fan like he was a box of rations from the Blitz.
"And what can I do for you?" she said.
